Product Information:
Hobbs Heirloom© Premium 80/20 Fusible Cotton/Poly Blend Batting is a double-sided, iron-on batting. This product eliminates the need for the time-consuming step of pin- or spray-basting and enables you to create your quilt 'sandwich' in no time at all!
Hobbs Heirloom© Premium 80/20 Fusible Cotton/Poly Blend Batting is manufactured in the same manner as our Hobbs Heirloom© Premium 80/20 (Natural) Cotton/Poly Blend Batting – it is lightly bonded and needle-punched for exceptional strength and durability and, once inside a project, it's machine-washable (and who doesn't love that?!).
Hobbs Heirloom© Premium 80/20 Fusible Cotton/Poly Blend Batting has an additional water-soluble, fusing medium applied to both sides of the batting, enabling quilters to simultaneously adhere their quilt top and back to the batting in one quick pressing. And because the fusing medium is water-soluble, this batting becomes as soft and supple as our Hobbs Heirloom© Premium 80/20 (Natural) Cotton/ Poly Blend Batting once the finished quilt in which it's placed is washed.
If desired, the quilt top and back can be ironed on separately, or the quilter may also choose to use only one side of the fusible batting, in which case a piece of parchment paper or a non-stick mat should be placed under the side which will NOT be fused so it doesn't stick to the ironing surface.
To fuse the Hobbs Heirloom© Premium 80/20 Fusible Cotton/Poly Blend Batting to your fabric, set your DRY iron to the appropriate temperature for your fabric (let it get nice and hot!) and press each area of the quilt, working from the center of the project to the outer edges – it's important that you don't move the iron, you're pressing NOT ironing!.
It's also important that you use a dry iron, no steam – the fusing medium is water-soluble and if you get this batting wet, it won't stick!
Press in each spot for approximately 5-7 seconds (test for adhesion by letting a pressed area cool before tugging on the fabric – if it's adhered, continue; if it's not, increase the amount of pressing time). Once you have covered the entire surface area of your quilt, allow the quilt to cool and check the back of your project to ensure it's fully adhered and that there are no wrinkles or creases. Should you find wrinkles or creases, you can gently lift the fabric away from the batting, then smooth it back down and press it in place – you can make these adjustments 1-2 times before the fusing medium will no longer adhere the batting to the fabric.
Hobbs Heirloom© Premium 80/20 Cotton/Poly Blend Batting should be used with medium or dark fabrics. If used with light colored fabrics, unbleached cotton can slightly darken white and light or pastel colors.
This batting is wonderful to quilt by machine, and close quilting will yield a flat, low-loft appearance, while more space between stitching/quilting will yield a slightly higher loft.
Quilting/stitching should be every 4" inches, or closer, and quilters may experience shrinkage of 3-5%.
